World Ocean Day Sound Laboratory 2008

The World Ocean Day Sound Laboratory took place on 8 June at the Foundry in London. Musicians created a live improvised soundtrack to nearly 5 hours of diving footage which was projected onto a wall in the venue’s basement. Notebook of a Mermaid also contributed to an exhibition called ‘Oceanic’ with a photo series called ‘The London Ocean’. The photos are of people who had volunteered to contribute a picture of themselves evoking the ocean in their homes e.g. by ‘diving’ in their bathtub or making jellyfish out of umbrellas and lampshades. In between, the journey between those places was documented through pictures of ocean themed places along the way such as Bethnal Green’s ‘Deep Sea Car Wash’ or the Oval ‘Seashore’ chippy.
For the promotion of this event, the Mermaid has spoken and played live on Resonance FM’s ‘The Foundry’s Late Late Breakfast Show’ on 6 June. Words of the day were of course ‘news / nautical / neverending song’!
